Back in the Studio!!
Hello everyone,
The month of August has blown by! It was my annual trip to the Northeast for art shows, catching up with friends, and outdoor adventures. I had art shows in Mystic, CT, Mount Gretna, PA, and Pittsburgh, and I'm happy to say the shows were a success! Pictured above are a few of my favorites that found new homes. A big thank you to my new and returning art collectors!
After a month on the road, it's great to get back in the studio and see what I can come up with next. I have 2 more shows this year: Alexandria, VA September 17 and 18, and Brookhaven, GA October 15 and 16.

Night Fall Over Pittsburgh
I took the incline to the top of Mount Washington to check out the view. I kept hearing about how it's a great view of Pittsburgh. A friend told to stay and watch for the night sky. It was impressive. I really enjoyed watching the eying sky slip away and the light of the city turn on. A beautiful city - it's official - I love this city - in the summer. Great biking, cool architecture, and the rivers. It has it all! It is too bad that I'll have to get back to work soon.
Have a great weekend,
Dawn

Channeling my Inner Fauvist
A good friend had us out to paint in the North Ga Mountains last week and everything was just so green. After piddling around a little bit, I decided just to have a little fun with it and just go bold. Below is the actual scene I was working from. I think you can find the stairs but see if you can find the Adirondack chair in my painting....just kidding : ) - Dawn
Still Life Demo
I have been teaching still life classes the past few weeks and that has be back painting florals. This was from todays class. I was thinking a bout a red, white and blue theme, thinking about the 4th of July. So I used warm colors in the red family for the background and the wonderful hydrangeas from the yard.
Everyone did a great job, but it was a little more challenging than I anticipated for a beginning class. I'll have to simplify the next assignment.
Happy painting - Dawn

"Welcome to Midtown" Made it to the AJC
You just never know who will see you when you're out and about painting the town. What a fun surprise to find my painting on the front of the Living Section today. I really love the improvement around Colony Square. The brightly colored letter are super cool and I like watching how people interact with them. A fun day of painting!!
Making Successful Grays by Michael Chesley Johnson
I follow Michael Chesley Johnson's blog and saw this the other day. I thought he had some good ideas about mixing grays and wanted to share them. I hope you find this as interesting as I did.
You can check out his work at http://www.michaelchesleyjohnson.com
Greys are both easy and difficult to conjure up. Easy, because there's nothing like a dirty brush to work its black magic in creating rather ugly greys. Difficult, because a pretty grey takes a certain amount of apprenticeship in mixing color.
First, let's make sure we've got reasonably clean brushes. That will keep you from summoning grey without meaning to. Now, let's think about how greys are made.
They say you can make a grey by mixing a color with its complement. This is true, but it can be a very muddy grey. A prettier grey can be made by mixing a color with its near-complement instead. This is because the grey is closer in character to the color being greyed. Try it. Use a color wheel to help you identify the near-complement. If you want to grey down a green, don't use red - instead, use red-violet or red-orange.
Let's take this a step farther. Look at the color you want to grey and decide if it is a cool or warm version of its base color. To grey it, add the same temperature of its complement. If it's a cool red, use a cool green. If you use a warm green with a cool red, this will make mud. Using a cool with a cool will make a more beautiful grey. As an example, I paint a lot of fog, and many times I'll start off with a light pink - that's cadmium red light with lots of white, and very cool - and then scumble on a light cool green, such as viridian with lots of white. This combination gives me a mudless fog.
In the little 5x7 sketch above, I use this approach, but for a sunny scene. The scene had a lot of grey in it. I painted all the major shapes with the complement of the correct value and correct color temperature, and then overlaid them with the local color.

A Little Local Color - Welcome to Midtown!
I've lived on Midtown, Atlanta for years, but haven't taken the leap to get out there and try to paint it. My comfort zone really lies with nature scenes. So while I am plenty happy to take my gear and paint in Piedmont Park, I have shied away from the streets and cars.
Why you ask? Because it's hard!!!
Well, now I'm ready to give it a try. I'll never get any better trying to capture the people walking down the street or bikes and cars zipping along if I don't just get out there and give it a shot.
Right now, I'm working at street level. Next, I'll have to capture the skyscapers. I'd really like to see if I can get that reflected light ...but that a whole other can of wax.
So, I'll keep it up and maybe before long I'll get there!!
Happy painting,
Dawn
Why do you do it?!?
Why do we do what we do? This is a question that keeps coming up in the classes I have been at C4 (business classes for artists). I am amazed by how hard this question is to answer.
Easy answers:
I can. I love it. I'm curious. Etc....
Why is this such a hard thing to answer? I have been making art most of my life. I have a degree in painting. I have been teaching painting classes for 14 years. But why do I do this? Well... I love making 3 dimensional space on a 2 dimensional plane, moving color back in forth within that 2D space. I love problem solving, and I just like to walk around and look and think about how so many things are possible on one little planet.
I have been assigned to make my mission statement as part of my class work, and after a lot of struggle, I think I have it.
Mission: Create expressive paintings that elevate the ordinary and encourage the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the day to day.
When it comes down to it, I always feel so lucky. I love my work and I can always learn and improve. I look forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.

Olmsted Quick Paint
Nothing like trying to paint a painting on location, in front of a lot of people and in only 2 hours!! This was my attempt at the Olmsted Invitation Quick Paint Competition. It received very positive feed back from the judges, so hopefully, I'm on the right track!
This was my second quick paint, but I didn't rush and just tried my best. I had a good time, and saw several friends out there, so, It was a fun day.
It had been predicted to rain, but the rain held off for the event, and luckily for me, I made it back the the van just as the sky opened up. It was quit the deluge!
Until the next time,
Dawn
Something a Little Different
I have so many unfinished demos in my studio left over from workshops, I decided to see if tI could do something with them.
This started of with one hydrangea on the top left and the lower sunflower on white canvas. I loved the little sunflower on the bottom, but it didn't seem to fit on the canvas. I decided to play around with color. By using the deep reds at the bottom, I felt like I could just give a hint of a vase and make the composition work.
It was a fun challenge and I'm liking it so far. On to the next one!! - Dawn
Plein air Adventure in Midtown
I had a little bit of a break in my schedule today, so I decided to get out and paint in the neighborhood. This new sign has just been installed just around the corner on Colony Square, and I just love it!
So, I gave it an attempt. It still needs a little work and I hope to get more people walking around in it, but I'm liking it! This is one of the things I like about being an artists in Atlanta, there are so many cool things to paint with in walking ( or biking ) distance.
Painting Location: Colony Square
This is the Northside on Colony Square at 15th and Peachtree. Across from the High Museum .
I took photos on my jog today. If I looks to busy, there are tons of gorgeous house back in the neighborhood
Parking would be either at Colony Square or find street parking back in the neighborhoods. Just read all the signs. There is metered parking as well. I would drop my supplies and then park.
Atlanta Painters @ the Harvest Farm
- Sunday, April 17, 2016
- 10:00am 1:00pm
- Harvest Farms752 White Street, Suwanne GA 30024
Bring a hat/sunscreen!--and let's picnic afterwards! There is a shaded seating area and great restroom facilities...bring a little snack to share and we can socialize...
This area is part of "old Suwanee" when it was still a blue-jean overalls kind of place. There are cute old houses along this road, a small church, as well as a railroad track and believe it or not an unpaved road...also the park has walking trails through the woods. Should be something for everyone here! I might bring my bike and go for a short exploratory ride afterwards if any one is interest in joining me...very quiet, no traffic in this area...
