Street scenes are a struggle for me, so I'm going to work on them and see if I can make a little progress .

Returning to Nature 12 x 16 oil on panel
With all the rains, it's a good time to try to capture the force of a fast moving water fall. This is the finished plein air painting from Victory park train. This is the ruins of an old factory. The water has cut a path through it, so I call this one " Returning to Nature" I have to admit, I like the way this one turned out. I have been working on city scenes here of late, and they not my strong point, so it's nice to get back in my comfort zone for a little bit.

Painting with Carol at Victory Creek
Last weekend I taught a two day workshop on my favorite subject - color! The first day we worked with color mixing, specifically, using the color wheel to make your colors lighter or darker. Working with the color wheel will keep you colors, vibrant and fresh. The next day we tackled making neutrals by working with compliments, and make them recede in space in your paintings.
It was a lot to tackle in a weekend, but everyone did a great job and left the class with a lot more knowledge about paint mixing. It's easier than you think!!

Fall is a great time to get outdoors to paint. The cooler temps are pleasant and the fall leaves are beautiful. But we have had so much rain
lately, it has really pushed me as an artist to try to capture all that color in low light. I love that there is always a new challenge!
I'll be headed to Coastal Carolina for a week of Plein Air the first week of November. Despite the exciting challenge of painting on gray days, I hope the rain stays away!

"Misty Morning on Lake Clair Meer"

This weekend, despite the rain, I taught a really fun plein air workshop. This was an introduction class geared to helping beginners get out there for the first time. We started in the studio, covering how to get started and then hit Piedmont Park to practice. We found a covered spot over looking Lake Clair Meer and got started. We got about 2 hours of painting in before heading back to beat the next round of rain storms. This turned out to be perfect practice for me. I have really been struggling with how to paint color without the help of the sun. Above is today effort. Seeing progress from last weekend, but still room for improvement.
A couple of the painters below, they really had a nice time. Even with the rain, we where covered and the temperature was great.

Painting the week away with friends in the upper Adirondacks! What a way to spend the week! For a week in June a group of about 100 artists arrive at Paul Smith College in upstate New York for a week of plein air painting and fellowship.
These are a few painting I worked on during the week along with one someone painted of me while out in the field. This is my second year going to the Adirondack Plein Air Invitational. I love having a week with no distractions, just paint all day. A great way to make improvements in your work and catch up with friends.
I am wrapping classes until the fall and packing my van for a 3 week painting trip, YAY! After looking at my schedule, I decided that I do have time to run a 4 week painting studio class on our usual Tuesday evenings. Take a look at your summer plans, and if you have time, join me in the Studio!

Join me Wed, April 22, for plein air demonstrations at Callanwolde. Callanwolde has partnered with the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational and will be hosting plein air artist for their first home school festival. I'll be out there painting from 10 - 2 on Wed, and you can find me at the Olmsted Parks the rest of the week. This is going to be a great event! 30 professional artist from across the US and over seas will be out at the Olmsted Parks for the painting competition. If you'd like to try your hand at plein air, there is an event on Sunday for all artists. It's the Paint Quick Event. It's 20.00 to enter and there will be awards and an opportunity to sell you painting as well.

This brand new event at Callanwolde promises to be a wonderful start to a tradition for families with Home Schooled children. Come celebrate the power of learning outside of a classroom setting with our expert faculty in the beautiful setting of the Callanwolde estate. Spring is also a time to celebrate the wonders of nature, so Think Green! All activities will enrich the lives of children by teaching them about the environment and nature.

Dawn Kinney Martin is an Atlanta-based artist with national and international collectors. Each year she paints plein air, which is painting on location, and takes photographs on her travels. These are used as reference materials throughout the year at her studio. Recognition for her expressive oil paintings includes acceptance at an Artists in Residence Program in Elizabeth City, NC, June 2013, November 2014 and a Merit Award from Manhattan Arts International Museum in New York for their juried exhibition, Herstory 2004. Emily Clanton is a creative-type living in the Atlanta area. Her latest work is inspired by traditional Japanese painting and her personal investigations into nourishing foods and their affects on the human body. This is a plein air workshop for everybody. I try to create a relaxed and fun environment for you to learn in. The class will be taught in oils and use palette knife and brush techniques. I use a limited palette that helps control and harmonize the color and If you've never tried plein air and want to give it a try, come on! I even have a few extra plein air easels that you can use if need. I will discus topics ranging from tips on setting up, how to narrow down the scene to dealing with the elements to flying with your supplies and wet paintings. Each morning will begin with a talk and a demo. Then, I'll help everyone get started and keep working with each student one on one and with group demos. We'll paint at Callaway Gardens, (the azaleas should be in full bloom), and the charming towns in the area, Warm Springs and Pine Mountain. Everything is within a few miles. You'll be surprised how much this area has to offer.
I love to get outside and really try to capture the essence of the landscape. All levels welcome, even complete beginners. Let me know if you will need an easel as I only have a few.
We'll paint from 10 - 5 each day.
