New Studio in Midtown Now Open for Classes

I am very excited about my new teaching space in Midtown. I have recently renovated the apartment in our charming house into a teaching studio

Having my own teaching space allows for lots of extra features you just can't offer at other places.

I hope you can join me for a class or workshop.

We meet on Thursdays for an afternoon of plein air painting. No Cost - Just Fun

6 Days, 10 Palettes, 9 Tables Later....Studio's Almost Ready!

The bulk of the work is finished and I'm ready to start offering classes in my new studio space.
Despite all the thunder storms this week, I was able to finish my studio project. I set up a tent in the back yard to be able to keep building and then used the front porch for the finishing work, mainly the sanding and painting.
Classes start on September 23 and I needed furniture for the students, mainly tables to hold their supplies. I decided to build my own out of reclaimed wood to match the feel of my cottage styled studio in Midtown. I made each table a little different, all about the same height, but I played with the pattern of the wood and made a few full-sized tables as well. I want it to be inviting, a place that students can feel comfortable and creative! So here it is ...6 days, 10 palettes and 9 tables later.

I hope my classes love the new space !

Paint with Color Confidence! Have you been struggling trying to controlling color in your art? Do you mix a lot of mud? Well, no more. This class will have you painting with color confidence.
You will learn about pure color and why it is so important, how to bend a color, how to use the color wheel to lighten and darken your colors, and more. The first half of the workshop will demonstrate the color mixing lessons, then students will be able to apply their new knowledge with a painting. You will finish a painting in class and you are going to love it! All levels welcome.

This course emphasizes artistic development in a relaxed and fun studio environment with a variety of music to keep you motivated. Regardless of your level of training or ability, you work on your own projects, using any medium you choose, in this self-paced class. You are encouraged to pursue individual interests and further develop your unique style. The instructor is available for guidance, motivation and demonstrations of technique. There will be class demos as well as individual assistance. Bring your painting supplies and reference materials to the first class sessions and be prepared to work. This is an on going class that offers a lot of flexibility for the students. Be a part of it, ongoing student are invited to participate in the 11 annual art show at Binders. Please contact the instructor with any questions about materials and what to bring for the first class.

Plein Air Competition This Weekend!

II have been preparing for my first plein air competition and it's almost here! This weekend is the 3rd Annual Paint Out at the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. Check in start at 7 am each morning to have your canvas stamped, although I doubt I'll start that early. All artists have to turn the stamped canvas in at the end of the day. Judging begins at 3:00 on Sunday, followed by a reception and sale from 6:30 - 8:30.

I wanted to make sure I was comfortable and very portable for this weekend so I made a new palette shelf for my easel. I took it out yesterday to give it a try and I LOVE IT ! I had room for everything. I put a shoulder strap on it so it was easy to carry as well.  If you find yourself in Marietta this weekend, stop by and say hello.

On the Easel Today

The fourth painting in my fall series. I started this in my open studio painting class last night and was able to work on it a little bit more this evening. I know this probably looks like a painting about a river in a field, but it's really about moving color back and forth in space. That's why I love painting, there is always a new challenge to work on.

This has really pushed me in the studio. I enjoy the challenge, but happy to slow down and explore ideas that take more time than a day. I really think this is a great way to improve your paintings.

Painting Day 27

Glad to wrap up my painting of the day. Now that I am finished, I can go inside and warm my toes!!! What a day. The snow wasn't supposed to hit Atlanta, but hit it  did! I was so worried about Rob out on the roads, but he made home safely, even though he had to walk the last couple of miles.YAY!  Below photos of the studio.

Painting Day 25 - Still in Sunny Florida

It warmed up for a both this afternoon, which was delightful! Can't say the same about my paintings. I had a few slow starts and I just wasn't happy with the color, composition, yada, yada, yada!!! So here is what I could come up with before the sun went down!  12x16 oil on panel.

This is the last day of the painting trip. I had a great time and only wish the weather had been a little better. Goodbye to all my painting friends, until next year!

Painting Day 23 in Florida

"Just 'cause it's sunny doesn't mean it's warm!" 5x7 oil on canvas. Okay, I knew it was going to be cold, but I wasn't prepared for the wind. It might have gotten up to 40, but I was still chilly all day. Oh, well, at least I 'm here in sunny Florida painting up a storm!

Apparently my subject wasn't very warm either. Just as I started  my painting, he went in to warm up and never can back! I ended up just having to make someone up to be the artist at work. Maybe I should title this on "Union Break". Haha! Tomorrow should be cooler, so I'll be wearing more layers for sure. Saturdays weather should be perfect!!

What a nutty day! I am packing for a 4 day plein air paint out in Florida. Leaving tomorrow, YAY!
I have a painting class tonight and one in the morning and then I am Florida bound. So, I may not get my post up in time tomorrow. We'll see how the drive goes.

Painting Day 19

"Anyway the Wind Blows" 12x12 oil on canvas.
After a fantastic weekend(Teaching a color theory workshop, hanging out with out of town friends, a great yoga class at Atlanta Hot Yoga) I was ready to hit the studio to paint my 19th paint this month. Isn't that nuts? I can't believe it's been 19 days. Only 11 more paintings and I will have finished my 30 painting in 30 days challenge. A big thank you to Leslie Saeta for putting this all together for us. If you haven't heard about Leslie you should check out her website. She is a great artist, teacher, and advocate for artists. Every week she host a blog radio show, Artist Helping Artist, that is just full of great tips. Check it out!

Painting Day 18 & Color Confidence Workshop

I just spent the past 6 hours talking about my favorite thing - color! This morning, a great group of students joined me at Callanwolde for a Painting with Color Confidence Workshop, and it was a blast. I love their energy and great questions. I think everyone went home with a new handle on how to mix and mange their colors. Thank everyone!

Below is my demo from class. We spent the first part of class talking about the importance of pure color and value. Then we talked about neutrals. I gave demos and exercises on how to neutralize or gray a pure color. After our lunch break we tackled  a still life to practice all that  color knowledge.
