Studio Tables are in the Works

I decided to build the studio furniture for my classes out of reclaimed wood. I love the idea of boycotting plastic and having hand built tables the really match the style of the studio.   Decided to go with a distressed blue and white color palette that goes with the venetian plaster and the white molding in the rooms. I think it'll give the space a warm and inviting feel. Hope my students will love it as well!

Painting with St Anne's Treehouse Two's Class

It's getting close to auction time at Saint Anne's Day School.
This year the school had artists come in and work with different classes to create a piece of art as a fundraiser for the school. I was paired up with the  Treehouse Two's class. Below is the project I worked on with the class. What a great group of young artists, teachers and parents.
After we came up with a plan, I built a 30x30 structure for the painting. Then I applied modeling paste and carved out the design.

Below - Day 1 - Working with the class. We started with the big areas of colors first.  Look at them go. I think everyones favorite part was the hand signatures on the back! Who doesn't want to get messy with art?

Below - Day 2- Now that the back ground colors have dried, I came back and we started on the leaves. We masked off the sky so the young artists could focus on the circles. It was so fun watching painting come together. What a great group!
Now that the young artists have finished, it was time for me to take the painting back to my studio for a few final details and to get it ready for the auction.  Touched up, varnished, wire on back, "Glow Tree"  is ready to go!

"Glow Tree" 30x 30 Acrylic on wood
I really enjoyed working on this project with the class. A big thank you to Moire Menning for all of her help in coordinating everything. I hope the auction is a huge success.
Happy painting!

On the Easel Today

The fourth painting in my fall series. I started this in my open studio painting class last night and was able to work on it a little bit more this evening. I know this probably looks like a painting about a river in a field, but it's really about moving color back and forth in space. That's why I love painting, there is always a new challenge to work on.

Happy painting!

Painting Day 27

5x7 Vintage Atlanta WGST 920"  oil on panel, palette knife painting.
Glad to wrap up my painting of the day. Now that I am finished, I can go inside and warm my toes!!! What a day. The snow wasn't supposed to hit Atlanta, but hit it  did! I was so worried about Rob out on the roads, but he made home safely, even though he had to walk the last couple of miles.YAY!  Below photos of the studio.
This is the first time the art van has seen snow!
Until tomorrow!

Happy painting!

Painting Day 19

"Anyway the Wind Blows" 12x12 oil on canvas.
After a fantastic weekend(Teaching a color theory workshop, hanging out with out of town friends, a great yoga class at Atlanta Hot Yoga) I was ready to hit the studio to paint my 19th paint this month. Isn't that nuts? I can't believe it's been 19 days. Only 11 more paintings and I will have finished my 30 painting in 30 days challenge. A big thank you to Leslie Saeta for putting this all together for us. If you haven't heard about Leslie you should check out her website. She is a great artist, teacher, and advocate for artists. Every week she host a blog radio show, Artist Helping Artist, that is just full of great tips. Check it out!

Painting Day 18 & Color Confidence Workshop

"Spicy Salsa" 9x12 Acrylic on canvas.

I just spent the past 6 hours talking about my favorite thing - color! This morning, a great group of students joined me at Callanwolde for a Painting with Color Confidence Workshop, and it was a blast. I love their energy and great questions. I think everyone went home with a new handle on how to mix and mange their colors. Thank everyone!

Below is my demo from class. We spent the first part of class talking about the importance of pure color and value. Then we talked about neutrals. I gave demos and exercises on how to neutralize or gray a pure color. After our lunch break we tackled  a still life to practice all that  color knowledge.

Fabulous artists at work! Thanks for coming out and expanding your color knowledge with me!
Getting ready to start the still life paying close attention to color mixing

Happy Painting!

Painting Day 17

"Lazy Day on the River" 16x20 oil on canvas, palette knife painting.

Yay, another one for the finished rack.

I am teaching a workshop in the morning, so now I had better get my supplies together and finish my demos.

Happy Friday!

Palette Knife Workshop: Reflections

Last Saturday I taught a palette knife paint workshop at Callanwolde. I thought I would do something to celebrate the season, so we painted poinsettias and chocolate. It was pouring outside, so I was happy everyone could make, and on time, at that!

There are 2 demos for the the class. The one on the right I did the night before and the other is the demo in class. It's always a good idea to run through a painting before the class. It gives you the chance to work out the composition, colors, etc.. in hopes that you don't make a glaring mistake in public!!

Here is the set up for the class. The class was all about painting reflections, so I went shiny object and put plexi glass down on top of the back drop. I had to big a whole bag of truffles to get the one with a green wrapper, so there was plenty left over to share.

I hope you all have a safe and joyful holiday!

Happy Fall - time to settle into the studio!

Happy Fall!
I have had a fantastic summer. Enjoyed a lot of traveling, painted in really cool places and  got to hang out with  great friends. Now, with just a few art shows left in the year, I am looking forward to settling into the studio and creating new work for 2014.

I have been thinking a lot about color lately and my new painting ( I hope ) will reflect this. It all started with  a color confidence workshop I taught over the summer.  I have been trying to really simplify color theory for my students and put it in easy to understand language. How do make it practical for how people really paint? I think this turned out to be one of the best classes I have taught about color, so I am now in the process of creating a second level, Color Confidence 11.  I'm really excited about this class, but haven't gotten it boiled down to the nuts and bolts just yet.

I really look forward to the time in the studio over the winter. the pressure of sales is off  and I can focus on creating and understanding color.

Happy fall ya'll!
Dawn

Using your Values to building a composition

I just finished teaching a workshop on painting landscapes and I thought I would share a few tips.

Original photo. This is a scene in France that I am working on.
I often like to make a black and white copy so that I can just focus on the values and not be distracted by the color.

I forgot to photograph Step 1 which was a  monochromatic value study. This is Step 2.

Step 2: now that you have blocked in the large areas of light and dark, check to make sure you like the design of your composition. This is the time to make adjustments. You can know start to build on the information you have down.

Step 3

Step 3: Working within in the pattern of your light and dark values, start to build the color.
Step 4

Step 4: continue to build the color, still mindful of your values. You can now begin to add details
Step 5
Step 5: Adding more detail and adjust the colors. If you keep your colors in the correct value range, you will keep the compositional design.

Step 6

Now for the fun to start - laying in the details and rich color. At this point, you are free to paint. You have your foundation set, so have fun.

I will post the finished painting ASAP

Cheers, Dawn
